29-year-old Venus had hoped to secure a coveted sixth Wimbledon singles crown.
27-year-old Serena has now won three, with her previous wins back in 2002 and 2003.
Serena has now won 11 Grand Slam titles and holds the Wimbledon, Australian and US Open crowns.
